James “Jimmy” (J.C.) Childress, devoted father, loving grandfather and a friend to everyone he met, passed
away on Wednesday, April 24 at the age of 93 years old.
Born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, he was the oldest of 4 children to Choyce and Myra Dove Childress. As a boy, he helped his dad at the local bakery, which is why he never ate donuts. He earned a degree in Textile Chemistry from the University of Tennessee in Chattanooga (UTC) and had a somewhat long career, traversing the Carolina's and leaving an indelible mark in his various roles within textile mills. His dedication and expertise
eventually led him to the esteemed position of President of Ballet Fabrics in Scottsboro, Alabama.
J.C. was a man of boundless talents and unfailing resilience. His life was a remarkable journey filled with adventures and accomplishments.
Within the fabric of his immediate family, J.C. wove values of education, diligence, and respect for all vocations. He raised three sons and two daughters, imparting upon them the importance of integrity and hard work, regardless of one's station in life. J.C. had an unparalleled ability to fix and build anything that crossed his path. From repairing cars and small appliances to constructing desktop computers and weekend lake houses, his hands were as skilled as they were versatile. He turned tragedies into opportunities.
When he lost his job at Ballet Fabrics, he moved to Louisiana with his youngest children to work with his brother Ernie in the oil fields. While working there he learned a new skill, engraving plastic tags used to label the oil platform electrical panels. He turned this skill into a successful small
business in New Orleans known as J and J Engraving where he worked until he retired in his 70s. When he lost his home in Hurricane Katrina, he made his way to Dallas, Texas and eventually landed in Stuart, FL living with his daughter and son in law in a small guest house.
J.C. is predeceased by his parents Choyce & Myra Dove Childress; brother Ralph & wife Joyce Childress; two of his children, Grayson & Glenn Childress; and one grandchild Tyler Childress. He is survived by his sister Jo Fraley & deceased husband Jim (Hixon, TN); brother Ernie Childress & companion Vicki (Lake Charles, LA); children Blaine Childress & his wife Delaine (Inman, S.C.) Jill Green (Scottsboro, Al.); Bonnie Landry & her
husband Kevin (Stuart, FL); numerous nieces and nephews; and 6 grandchildren Emily Berry and Andy Green (Scottsboro, Al); Grace Childress (Covington, RI); Betsy Landry (Hobe Sound, FL); Clayton Landry (Stuart, FL); and Logan Childress (Redding, Ca.).
