Gill Temple Hanlon

Gill Temple Hanlon passed away early Thursday morning, 11-14-24, at the age of 94. She was born in Brodnax, VA, and was the only child of Roy and Annie Temple. She enjoyed school and decided in the 4th grade that she wanted to become a teacher. After graduating from Lawrenceville High School, she attended a teacher’s college, now called James Madison University, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Education in 1951. Her senior year she was President of the student government.

She began her teaching career in Halifax County in 1951, where she met George Hanlon. They got married in 1953 and began 64 happily married years. They moved to Florida in 1959 and soon joined the First United Methodist Church in Fort Pierce. She was President of the United Methodist Women, taught the high school senior Sunday School class, and was a charter member and substitute teacher for the Christian Fellowship class.

After a 14-year recess from teaching while raising three children, Gill resumed teaching first at Lawnwood Elementary, and then at John Carroll High School for 26 years, and served as Chairman of the Social Studies Department. She received the Outstanding Secondary Educators of America award in 1975. Gill was chosen as one of twelve educators from across the nation to attend a Russian Studies Seminar at Yale University, with a follow-up trip to Russia in 1985. She later taught a course in Russian history for the Adult Education Program at Indian River Community College. She received the James Madison University Distinguished Alumni Achievement Award in 1985.

Gill was an accomplished seamstress and enjoyed traveling. An avid bridge player, she and George taught bridge classes after moving to the Cascades community in Port St. Lucie in 2002. Gill held the offices of Regent and Historian for the Cora Stickney Harper Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and was a member of the Jamestown Society. Gill was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a friend of many. She was preceded in death by her husband, George. Survivors include daughters Annette Hanlon-Robinette (Nelson Robinette), and Sandi Hanlon-Breuer (Bob Breuer); son Chuck Hanlon (Diane Free Hanlon); grandchildren Katherine Hanlon Ard (Jeffrey Ard), Kyle Hanlon, and Kristine Hanlon; great-grandchildren Harper and Emma Ard; step-grandchildren Heidi, Robert (Stephanie), Daniel (Sherine), and Peter (Aya) Breuer, and step-great-grandchildren Knox, Hannah, and Ben Breuer.

Memorial contributions may go to First United Methodist Church of Port St. Lucie, or to Treasure Coast Hospice. The family is deeply grateful to Martin Funeral Home and Crematory for all their care
