George John Evans

George J. Evans was born on August 5, 1931 to Mr. George J. and Mrs. Helen T. Evans in Trenton, N.J. He was married to Mary Jane Lambert Evans on August 25, 1956 in the Chapel at the Naval Air Station, Whiting Field, Milton, FL. CDR Evans was the father of David B. (wife Julia, daughters Molly and Laura, husband Ryan Laue and great-grandson, Evan David), Teresa J. (son Bryce, daughter Hannah), G. John (son Derek and wife Stephanie), Elizabeth A. and Janet M. Evans (husband Robert Kuveikis). He was predeceased by his parents, George and Helen Evans, son David, grandson Bryce, and brothers Robert and William. Surviving are wife, Mary Jane, and sister, Kathleen.

CDR Evans graduated from Trenton Catholic Boys High School in 1949 and attended Rider College on a scholastic scholarship, graduating in 1953, and earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Commerce. He received a Master’s in Business Administration in 1981 from the University of Miami.

CDR Evans enlisted in the Naval Reserve in 1951 and was commissioned in 1953 as an Ensign in the U. S. Navy Supply Corps. His first permanent duty station was at NAS Whiting Field as the Disbursing Officer. He was released from active duty in 1955 and worked for American Steel and Wire Co. CDR Evans returned to active duty in 1956 and was ordered to flight training and received his wings and designation as a Naval Aviator in 1957. At that time, he also received a commission in the Regular Navy. 

Tours of duty included squadrons in both the Atlantic and Pacific Fleets and the Advanced Training Command, various fleet staffs, Staff of the Chief of Naval Operations, and duty on the Joint Chiefs of Staff. He served during the Korean War and the war in Viet Nam where he flew in the Tonkin Gulf engaged in surveillance, reconnaissance, and anti-interdiction flights in support of fleet operations. CDR Evans ended his career in the Navy as Executive Officer at the Naval Communications Station Washington in Washington, DC, retiring in 1975. A combat-related disability was awarded in January 2013 by the Veterans Administration and the Secretary of the Navy.

Subsequent to his military career, CDR Evans worked in various companies in marketing, sales, and finance. He fully retired in 1989 from the position of Finance Director for the St. Lucie County Sheriff's Department.

 A Visitation and Prayer Vigil will be held on Wednesday, July 17, 2024, at the Stuart Chapel of Martin Funeral Home and Crematory, 961 S. Kanner Highway, Stuart, FL from 3:00 pm-5:00 pm with Deacon Angel officiating at 4:30 pm.

 A Mass will be held Thursday, July 18, 2024 at 10 am at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 1454 SW Mapp Road, Palm City, FL with Father Martin Dunne officiating. 

An inurnment will be held at the Pensacola National Cemetery at a later date with full U.S. Naval Honors.
